How GPS Fuel Monitoring Works

GPS fuel monitoring combines a tracker with a fuel-level sensor (or CAN data) to show tank level, refills, drains and consumption on the map.

GPS fuel monitoring works by connecting a fuel-level sensor (ultrasonic or capacitive rod) or reading CAN-bus fuel data into the GPS tracker. The tracker reports tank level over time, so the platform plots fuel curves, flags sudden drops (possible theft), records refills, and calculates consumption per km — turning raw position data into real fuel control.

Fuel-Level Sensor vs CAN

A dedicated fuel-level sensor gives the most accurate tank reading, independent of vehicle make. CAN-bus fuel is easier to install (no new hardware) but depends on the vehicle exposing fuel data.

Detecting Fuel Theft

The platform compares fuel drops against stops and ignition. A sharp drop while parked with engine off triggers an alert — the clearest sign of siphoning or theft.
