Can GPS trackers be used worldwide?

GPS satellite positioning offers global coverage, but whether a tracker can connect to the internet overseas depends on the device’s frequency band, local carriers, SIM cards, and platform configuration. This article explains the difference between “being able to locate” and “being able to upload location data,” helping you confirm the right equipment and communication solutions before purchasing overseas GPS trackers or arranging cross-border vehicle transportation.

Can GPS trackers be used worldwide?

“Will this GPS tracker work in the Philippines? Can it be sold in Africa? If a vehicle crosses into another country, will it still be trackable?”

These are questions customers frequently ask. The answers are:GPS provides satellite positioning services worldwide, but whether a GPS tracker will function properly in a given location depends on whether its communication network and SIM card are compatible.

When buying equipment, simply asking, “Is it compatible worldwide?” isn’t enough.

Just because a device can receive a satellite signal doesn’t mean its location will necessarily be transmitted to a cell phone.

Common in-vehicle GPS trackers primarily perform two functions: first, they receive satellite signals to calculate the vehicle’s location; second, they transmit that location via a cellular network to a management platform, where you can view it on your phone or computer.

So, satellite positioning and mobile communications are two different things.

For example, when a vehicle enters a remote area, the device may still be able to determine its location, but if there is no available cellular network in the area, the platform will temporarily be unable to receive new data. Similarly, when a vehicle enters an underground parking garage or an enclosed warehouse, the network connection may be functioning normally, but the device may not receive a strong enough satellite signal.

If the location isn’t updating, first determine whether it’s a positioning issue or a communication issue—this will speed up troubleshooting.

Even though they are both 4G trackers, they may support different frequency bands.

The network frequency bands used vary by country and carrier. Even for the same model of tracker, there may be different versions of the communication module.

Just because a device can connect to the internet in China doesn’t mean it will necessarily work with a foreign SIM card. Even if the packaging says “4G,” you should verify which specific frequency bands are supported and whether those bands are covered by the target carrier’s actual network.

If vehicles will be traveling across international borders, the countries along the route should be taken into account, rather than just confirming the point of departure. Additionally, whether 2G or 3G service is still available locally will affect the usability of older devices; one cannot rely solely on past test results.

Choosing the Right SIM Card Is Also Important

After adjusting the frequency band, you also need to check whether the SIM card has data service enabled, whether it is authorized for use with this type of device, and whether parameters such as the APN are configured correctly.

When using a local SIM card, you need to verify carrier coverage and plan terms; when using an IoT roaming SIM card, you need to verify which countries it supports, which local carriers it connects to, and the data charges.

“Global roaming support” does not mean there is signal coverage in every country or on every road. In mining areas, mountainous regions, and remote transportation routes, it is best to arrange for actual testing.

Can the device still record its route when there’s no internet connection?

Some GPS trackers support offline storage. When there is no cellular network connection, the device first saves valid location records and then uploads them to the platform once connectivity is restored.

This can help reconstruct historical routes, but it does not mean that vehicles can be monitored remotely in real time while offline. Offline storage capacity, recording intervals, and data upload methods must be confirmed based on the specific model.

If the project requires continuous remote data transmission in areas without cellular coverage, solutions such as satellite communications must be evaluated separately, as standard 4G trackers cannot address this issue on their own.

Before shipping, clearly specify the country of use and the carrier.

When purchasing GPS trackers from overseas, we recommend first specifying the country of use, the mobile carrier or SIM card plan, the vehicle type, and whether cross-border use is required. If connecting to your own server, you’ll also need to confirm configuration details such as the device protocol, server address, and port.

FOFN, a subsidiary of Shenzhen Huiwen Xinglian Technology Co., Ltd., provides GPS tracking devices and platform integration support. Device versions and communication configurations can be evaluated based on the target market. Before bulk installation, test positioning, connectivity, and data reporting using prototype units to more easily identify issues that arise during actual use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a GPS tracker need a SIM card to track location?Receiving GPS satellite signals does not require a SIM card. However, common cellular trackers require a SIM card and an available data network to upload location data to a remote platform.

Can GPS trackers used in China be used directly when taken abroad? Not necessarily. You need to verify the device’s frequency bands, local network coverage, SIM card permissions, and platform configuration; you can’t assume it will work just because it works in China.

Does support for GPS and Beidou mean it can connect to the internet anywhere in the world? No. GPS and Beidou are satellite positioning systems; a device’s connectivity depends on its communication module, the local network, and the SIM card solution.

Can a smartphone still track a vehicle in real time without a 4G signal? If a device relies on 4G for data uploads and no other communication methods are available, the mobile app will typically only display the last reported location. When viewing this information, be sure to check the update time as well.

Is a “Global Edition” GPS tracker suitable for all countries? This should not be interpreted literally. “Global version” typically indicates support for multiple frequency bands; however, actual usage still requires verification of the target country and carrier, as well as confirmation of local device access and certification requirements.

If you plan to use GPS trackers overseas, please feel free to send FOFN the country of use, mobile carrier, and quantity, and we’ll help you select the right model. Email:service@fofn.net; WhatsApp:+86 159 1970 3660.
